Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the developing placenta shortly after fertilization. During normal pregnancy, hCG can be detected in the serum 7 days after conception. The concentration of hCG continues to grow rapidly, often exceeding 100mIU/ml on the first day of delay of the rules to reach between 100,000 and 200,000 mIU/ml at 10-12 weeks of pregnancy. The rapid onset of hCG after conception and then the increase in its concentration during early pregnancy makes it an excellent marker for early detection of pregnancy.
