It is a luxury version of the classic South American herbal tea drink - maté or Paraguay tea - and was used as a caffeine drink before the European settlers introduced coffee plantations to Latin America. Steenbergs Yerba Maté loose leaf is processed in a similar manner to "normal" China tea with the leaves picked, steamed then dried over a fire before being left to age and further develop its flavour. Can be drunk as is or with milk or sugar depending on taste. Mate has a slightly higher anitioxidant capacity than green tea. Please be aware that Yerba Maté contains caffeine, so is not caffeine free unlike many herbal teas. Instructions: use 1 teaspoon on Steenbergs Yerba Maté per cup, then pour over boiling hot water and steep for about 5 minutes.
